Maintenance of commercial ice machines is an invaluable investment of time. Preventing irreversible damage now will save thousands of dollars on parts and labor costs later. You do not have to be a mechanical engineer to perform simple maintenance tasks on you ice machine and there are several small things that will make a big difference. Taking the time to learn how to properly care and maintain your ice machine will make the task easier and less time consuming.
Some very simple things that should be looked at on a regular basis include changing the water filters, investing in anti-microbial protection, sanitizing your machine regularly, cleaning the gaskets, and cleaning the condenser coils. Some of these tasks need to be performed more regularly than others but none of the above are costly or incredibly time consuming.
Changing the water filters should be taken care of approximately every six months. This is a vital part of your ice machine maintenance as it effectively removes sediment from the water, inhibits scale and removes odor and bad taste. Sediment in your water will give ice a cloudy appearance, removing this sediment will keep your ice clean and clear in appearance. Scale build up in your machine over time can and will drastically reduce the ice production. Another benefit of maintaining the water filter is, some companies, ICE-O-Matic for instance, will offer an extended warranty at no additional cost when customers replace the filter in their ice machine every six months. The wonderful thing about the worldwide web is that suddenly we have access to stores all over the world. BUT how many of us actually ever shop online outside of our home territory? The answer is not many; less than 1% in fact. What a shame that is. There are so many incredible products out there. In fashion, global shopping is the perfect way to ensure your look is totally unique, after all, who else at the next office party is going to be wearing shoes from Spain, designer jeans from the US, lingerie from France, and silver jewelry from the UK?
The most popular reasons people give for not shopping on foreign websites are:
- Language – Clearly if you can’t read the site, you aren’t going to shop.
- Currency – If the store is not in your own currency it is hard to tell what you are spending.
- Security – Many people are concerned about the security of their card details on foreign sites.
- Shipping costs – Many sites either do not offer overseas shipping or charge a huge amount for it.
- Import duties – Many people fear that their orders will be taxed on arrival into their home country. BUT in fact the US duty free allowance is $800, so you shouldn’t get billed any extra costs unless you have really gone crazy.
- Shipping times – Many people are concerned that their order will take weeks or even months to arrive and they will have no comeback.
These are all fair concerns, but if you shop around, there are some fantastic British sites offering unique and unusual jewelry and fashion accessories you should consider. They are obviously in English, and with the weak British pound, they are also now also great value for money.
If you do decide to try shopping online in the UK, these are the things you need to look out for: Read more…
Now that Halloween is over, its officially the ‘Holiday Shopping Season’ and a good time for some tips on managing our consumption. Over the holiday season, westerners generate more trash than at any other time of the year so here are some helpful ideas to reduce our impact and have a happy, healthy holiday.
1. Shop Online. Online retailers tend to have better prices and more choices than brick and mortar stores, plus you’ll save gas, time and stress. Comparison shopping sites are especially useful for finding the best price and checking product specifications before you buy. Online purchases are often shipped straight from the factory to you, so it can also cut down on the overall freight impact.
2. When you do shop at a brick and mortar store, take your own reusable shopping bags, they’re inexpensive and hold more than the plastic bags used by most stores.
3. When purchasing gifts make sure it’s something the person will actually use by considering their interests and looking for a greener choice. For example, for jewelry, chocolate or tea and coffee lovers, try organic, fair trade products. There’s a huge selection of gorgeous and unique fair trade, organic jewelry available from companies like Gifts with Humanity, Original Good and The Andean Collection, to name a few. Fair trade merchants not only sell beautiful, eco-friendly, handmade gifts but they also help empower and provide a living wage for artisans in developing countries.
4. Gift cards can be a great present for those hard to buy for recipients on your list and don’t require much packaging. Many retailers are even offering earth friendly gift cards made from bio-plastic. My Mom thinks that they’re too impersonal but I disagree, I like receiving gift cards so that when the after Christmas sales start I can hit the stores and get in on the great deals available.
5. For the techies, wireless e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook are hugely popular alternatives to hard copy books and magazines. They provide instant access to millions of books, magazines, blogs and more, at a lower cost than hard cover editions and The Nook will even allow you to share your e-books with other Nook users.
6. Candles make fantastic gifts but conventional candles are made of petroleum based waxes loaded with synthetic dyes and artificial fragrances that may smell great but often trigger allergies and produce soot. You can still enjoy giving candles and scents by choosing earth friendly soy candles scented with essential oils. They burn longer and cooler than traditional candles and rarely trigger allergies. Soy candles are available at most stores that sell conventional scented candles.
7. If you like to decorate your gifts with bows try using fabric. Gift wrap itself presents environmental issues in that the metallic and plastic types take a long time to decompose compared to plainer wrap and can give off toxic fumes when burned, so consider recycled paper or newspaper, wrapping gifts in scarves, towels or fabric or placing the gift in a basket or reusable shopping bag.
8. About 40 percent of annual battery sales occur during the holiday season. Buy rechargeable batteries for your electronic gifts, and consider giving a battery charger as well. Rechargeable batteries reduce the amount of potentially harmful materials thrown away, and can save money in the long run.
9. Have a create-your-own-decorations party! Invite family and friends to create holiday decorations such as ornaments made from old greeting cards or cookie dough, garlands made from strung popcorn or cranberries, wreaths made from evergreens and flowers, and potpourri made from kitchen spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Use LED tree light sets, they’ll last far longer and use a great deal less electricity and put a timer on your external lighting decorations to save energy.
10. The Holiday Season is an important time for you and your family, think outside the box a little and you can have a greener Christmas that will benefit the environment without sacrificing holiday cheer.

I can’t believe winter it’s almost here! I remember when I had to shop for summer clothes and now I have to prepare for winter shopping.
Fleece Jackets are popular outerwear during the fall and winter across the country. Perfect as a light jacket during the cool fall weather and the perfect layer atop a wool sweater during the winter. The polyester velour fabric is lightweight and constructed to retain heat, maximizing the wearer’s warmth and comfort. Fleece jackets and pullovers remain breathable while it retains heat. Aside from its unique construction and versatile use, fleece products are ideal for winter outerwear for their ease of washing and maintenance. Some of the most common products made from fleece include blankets and jackets. One example is the popular patagonia fleece jacket. This jacket fits perfectly for the cold weather and is versatile. It can be used for a wide range of temperatures. Many fleece jacket makers have started to make fleece jackets from recycled polyester and fleece. Others incorporate other post-consumer recycled fibers (even old plastic water bottles) into their product. Companies such as Patagonia have programs in place. To learn more about Patagonia’s program click here.

Here are some tips on the different types of fleece:
- Lightweight fleeces: also known as microfleeces since they are made of lighter fabrics. This type of fleece is perfect for scarves, shirts, leggings, lightweight jackets, and housecoats.
- 100-weight fleeces: are fuzzy since they are slightly heavier than lightweight fleeces. 100-weight fleeces are fuzzy on either sides or one side. This fabric is perfect for lightweight gear for your feet, hands, and heads.
- Medium-weight fleeces: this type of fabric is one of the most common and versatile on the market. Some of the fleece products include vests, jackets, blankets, mittens, hats and more.

The sooner you start taking care of your Christmas shopping the better. We’ve all been there. It’s a few days before Christmas, and you still don’t have gifts for over half the people on your list. It’s too late to order online, since you can’t be sure of getting the thing delivered on time. But, you’re paralyzed with fear of browsing crowded stores that look like they’ve already been ransacked. The simplest way to avoid this all-too-common situation is to start shopping as early as possible. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having all your shopping done by Thanksgiving. That way you can kick back and really enjoy the holiday season free of gift-finding stress.
So why haven’t you gotten started yet? Maybe there are a few too many people on your list that seem to already have everything. No worries! This is a common source of holiday shopping procrastination. Here are some possible gift solutions for people who seem to need nothing.
Gag Gifts: You might think gag gifts are corny, and primarily given by crazy great uncles with odd hobbies and collections, or a perhaps a great aunt that likes to crochet clothes for her many cats. While this may possible be true, the right gag gift can, in fact, make people laugh over and over again. That’s the gift you’re really giving: laughter. And, who couldn’t do with a little more of that?
Pet Gifts: Does the person you’re having trouble finding a present for have a pet? Give them a gift for their pet! Pet gifts let owners interact more with their pets, give them a treat, or just make taking care of them easier. True pet lovers will be pleased that you thought them and their best friend.
Charity Donations: Perhaps the person you’re gift shopping for would like something a little more meaningful. Consider making a donation to their favorite charity in their name. Many charities will send magazines about their cause, or updates about the use of the donation to those who donate. So whoever you donate on behalf of can see the impact of their gift, and get the latest information on the cause.
Now that you got some new ideas, hopefully you get going on your gift shopping, and still have time for seasonal festivities. Good luck and Happy Holidays!
