If you are a frequent shopper at a store, it’s worth getting to know the experienced associates as they can point you to the best deals and give you advance notice of upcoming markdowns and sale events.
How to spot em’? One indicator is a bunch of schwag on their name badge. Look for the customer service sticker that is faded and nearly worn off. A second indicator is how they glance around the store. If they use their peripheral vision, then that is a good sign that they are a grizzled vet. Only a newbie/tourist looks by turning their head. If you are still unsure, ask for directions to an item/department. If they scratch their head and say “ummmm”, then move along.
So now that you have found your new store friend, here are some questions to ask:
What day do you do your markdowns?
Where is the best clearance placed?
When is your next big sale?
Where is the best deal in the store?
My store buddy at a local wine shop always gives me the heads up on big markdowns and sales. I can typically get great wines for a third of the cost of a big box store (I have checked). Next on my agenda is to get him to send me e-mail alerts of upcoming buys.
