Shopping for Your New Puppy

President elect, Barack Obama promised his daughters a new puppy that they will bring to the White House. Do you have a puppy or have your heart set on one that you plan to adopt? Is your house ready for the puppy?

You will need some preparation before your new ball of joy comes home. Here is an initial shopping list for your puppy.

Adjustable Dog Collar and Leash: You want to get this even before you adopt your dog. Make sure you find the right size and type for your dog. There are many types available like the retractable leash and collars with a harness. Always check the type with your vet or a dog trainer. Your puppy is going to try to chew on the leash (if he is left for a few seconds without an engaging toy), so try finding a sturdy leash.

Dog Crate, Pet Enclosure or Playpen: Think long term when deciding which one to buy. Will it last as your puppy grows? Is your puppy well trained and can manage in an open playpen or would a closed crate be more safe for your dog and your home?

Kongs: These are very popular to keep your pup busy and stay away from your furniture, slippers and cushions. You can stuff the kong with kibble or  chews or line it with peanut butter to make it more fun.

Dog Food: You will need a good supply of this to keep you from going back each week. Look at the number of servings on the food pack and make sure you get enough to last you for some time. Ask your vet for a recommendation and stick with a good brand. Nutrition is key for the health of your pup.

Vet Supplies: When you take your puppy for a check-up, your vet will suggest flea control, vaccinations and tests. Make sure you get a checklist and cross things off, so you don’t forget essential supplies.

Dog Training Supplies: Training is a must for all puppies and its lots of fun. Any dog owner you meet will tell you that training is the best investment for your dog. It will provide your puppy the mental stimulation and physical exercise needed, so enroll as soon as you can before difficult behaviors set in and spoil the fun.

Your puppy is going to demand a lot of attention, so think about shopping online and ordering supplies regularly, so you don’t have to be stressed about going to the pet store each time you run out of dog food, dog treats or chews.

Enjoy your puppy and spend time walking, training and playing with him/her.
