Nike – Victory, Running and Marathons

  • The word Nike comes from the Goddess of Victory in ancient Greece. She is the goddess of strength, speed, and victory. Nike is roman equivalent of Victoria. The image on the right is that of the Greek goddess from BritishMuseum.org
  • According to the legend of the marathon, “Niki!” (”victory”) was the last word spoken by the soldier Pheidippides before he collapsed and died after covering 150 miles in two days.
  • Nike’s original name was Blue Ribbon Sports. Blue Ribbon Sports was founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight and renamed Nike in 1978.
  • During the 2000 opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics, Nike aired a satirical ad on the parody of horror films. The ad was titled “horror”. You can find the ad on YouTube by searching for “Nike Horror Ad.”nike-marathon-bag
  • Nike has a sponsorship deal with the U.S. Olympic Committee because of which it gets to outfit victorious athletes on the medal stand.
  • The Nike women’s marathon that takes place each year in San Francisco awards a Tiffany’s necklace to all finishers. The marathon also features a “chocolate mile”, which is a mile of chocolate goodies from Ghirardelli.nike-iii-running-shoe
