Flip flops are worn across the world but have unique names in each country. The other day, I was at REI and heard someone ask the assistant for “slippers”. At first the assistant gave a puzzled look, and then said “oh you mean flip flops.” Slippers probably derives from the ease with which you can slip on these footwear. Adidas has a wide range of comfortable men’s flip flops and colorful women’s flip flops in light pink, blue and green.
Let’s take a look at some of the names that flip flops are referred to in different countries: Thongs in Australia, Baffies (from shuffle) in Scotland, Chappal or Hawaii Chappal in India, Surippa in Japan, and Tsinelas or Hawaianas in the Philippines. Flip flops remind me of comfort, relaxation, the beach, warm weather, fun and frolic.
