I have lived out of my parents nest ever since I started college. Along the way I’ve compiled a list of the real necessities that I couldn’t live without, which your first time college student will eventually want when living in the: dorm, sorority house or renting a room off campus.
Here is my top ten college dorm room checklist:
- Shower Tote: must have drain holes and is rustproof
- LCD Flat Panel TV: can double as a computer monitor, play DVD’s and hook up to the schools’ free TV
- Power Strip: outlets are usually few and awkwardly located
- Hand Sanitizer: will save your collegiate from many trips to the doctors
- Sleep Mask and Ear Plugs: will keep your collegiate rested
- Downy Wrinkle Releaser: quicker to use than an iron and freshens clothes too
- Army Duffle Bag: Fit a month’s worth of dirty clothes
- Baby Wipes: cleans your desk and your face when things get a little messy
- Command Hooks: for hanging wet towels, jackets, photo frames and everything else
- Mini Refrigerator: will keep the energy drinks cold and leftovers fresh
Congratulations High School Graduate. I hope you enjoy college as much as I did! If you have other items to add to my checklist, be sure to add them in my comments.

To gain more space in your small dorm room consider using a Loft Bed. Do a Google search for College Loft Bed and you will find a variety of vendors selling them.
Thank you for the comment. You are right, having a lofted bed does free up extra storage or lounge area in a smaller room. Before you look into buying one, your dorm might already have the extra leaves to loft or raise your bed. Colleges are aware of the space limitations, so they buy a certain amount of lofts and raisers that are made specifically for that bed. To find out if your dorm/sorority house has these attachments for free or for a fee, ask your House Manager or Resident Advisor.
Board games. Everyone going to college should take games to play with new friends. Better than just watching tv, very cheap entertainment.
