Understanding Shoe Terminology

Finding a good pair of men’s shoes can be challenging if you don’t know some of the terms used in the shoe industry. If you are a bit confused about terminology when it comes to looking for new men’s shoe styles, here is a glossary of shoe terms that might help you determine the quality of a shoe:biobalance-antipronation-insoles-pair

  • Aglet – The tip on the end of the shoelace.
  • Arch – The high, curved part of the sole between the middle of the shoe and the heel.
  • Back seam – The vertical seam at the back of the shoe.
  • Counter – The back part of the shoe that gives a shoe its structure.
  • Grommets – Metal or plastic reinforcement used for shoestring holes.
  • Insole – Foot bed of the shoe, where you put your foot.
  • Outsole – Bottom of the shoe, where the shoe touches the ground.
  • Shank – The part that gives the shoe its structure. It is found under the arch of the foot and runs between the heel and the outsole.
  • Upper – The part of the shoe that covers the toes, top of foot, sides of foot, and back of heel.
