If you like to walk for fitness, choosing walking shoes should be high on your list of important things to do. The most important thing to know is that good shoes need to fit your feet comfortably and with total foot support.
- The best shoe will have a flat, undercut heel and provide flexibility, support, and cushioning.
- You may find that you need bigger walking shoes than street shoes, since feet swell during intense exercise.
- Look at the wear pattern of your old shoes. If you wear the inner side of your shoes, you are a pronator. If you wear the outside edge, you are a supinator. If you see a normal, even wear pattern, you have a neutral foot. Your wear pattern will be a guide on how to choose walking shoes.

- Some people prefer to walk in hiking shoes, but they are truly designed for uneven and unpredictable terrain. You will not get as much flexibility in a hiking shoe.
- If you want to know how to choose hiking shoes, look for similar qualities with additional ankle support, a deep tread, and fast-drying material.

I actually found some great running shoes at this place called foot solutions. I actually recommend them and especially an actual visit to the store. I went and had a free foot screening done I purchased the inserts that were molded specifically for my feet and I realize what a difference it made when I added them to my heels and even my other walking shoes my balance is so much better and it had definitely helped with my back problems. The inserts I have for my running shoes I can actually use in my other shoes which works perfect for me.
