At last week’s swimming championships in Rome, 43 swimming records were broken in 40 swim events. Something fishy must be going on eh? Well, it seems the majority of swimmers were wearing the sleek all body polyurethane suits. Sound pretty high-tech, but actually the idea has been around for a while. Polyurethane laminate has been used as weatherproof coating for many textiles over the year; it is only recently that is has elliciated attention with these polyurethane swimsuits.
Polyutherane is the Swimming World’s performance enhancing drug…err suit of choice. Officials are considering a ban of the suits later in the year. The suits are said to add extra buoyancy and be able to compress energy for a powerful launch against the wall. Some swimmers even took to wearing two at once! Yet for all their added performance enhancing benefits, the suits still could not beat a (polyurethane) suitless Michael Phelps. Clad only in a classic Speedo brief, he posted his own record breaking time at the event. Which goes to show that even the best thechonology can’t beat good old blood, sweat and tears.
Do you think a suit will be sufficient enough to beat Michael Phelps?
