I love taking pictures with my digital camera, and one of the things I need to watch out for are running out of space on my memory card for my photos. In this day and age of cheap and high capacity Canon memory cards, it makes sense to carry a spare or two around with you, especially if you’re shutter happy like I am, and take hundreds of pictures.

When choosing a Canon memory card, though, it’s important to watch out for the exact kind of memory card you need for your camera. Take for example the SDHC SD memory card. This is the standard size when it comes to memory cards for cameras, and should fit into most Canon and other digital cameras. This is the memory card that most people should be familiar with.

However, there are other sizes of memory card as well, so it’s crucial to verify the exact type of memory card you need. Beyond the SDHC memory card, there is also Ultra Compact memory card, which is slightly smaller in size and squarer in shape than SD memory cards, and typically go into digital cameras that have a smaller profile. Some Canon cameras use the ultra compact exclusively, so be aware of that when looking for a Canon memory card.

Another type of memory card to watch out for is the Compact Flash card. Also sometimes referred to as the “photo hard drive”, these flash memory cards are larger in size than typical memory cards, and usually have greater capacity. They are generally used more often in digital video cameras, but some Canon photo cameras make use of it as well, especially since many Canon cameras also record video.

These are just a few of the more common examples of some of the memory cards that are available today. Just because a memory card is marketed as a Canon memory card, don’t be too quick to assume that it will work with your model. Although some Canon cameras can take different types of cards, many will only work with a specific type of card, and it would be a shame not to be able to take any photos just because you got the wrong Canon memory card.
