Sailing in Style: America’s Cup

nautical-lookThe America’s Cup is the Sailing World’s biggest competition. It was announced yesterday that the 33rd America’s Cup sailing race will be held on February 8, 2010 at Ras al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. The venue, like the Olympics, is not set in stone but instead is chosen by the defending champions. Though it will be the first time the race is held in the Persian Gulf, the location offers up summery Mediterranean weather in the dead of winter. The race itself will be a one on one competition between the defending champion Team Alinghi and the challenger BMW Oracle.

So if you are thinking of heading off to watch the race this coming February, be sure to root for your favorite team in perfect summer sailing style.

What should you wear to a sailing event such as this? Good question. Traditional nautical wear (or “yacht wear”) consists of preppy sweaters, blazers, and light suits of a white and navy color scheme with a bit of red accents. If you aren’t fortunate enough to attend the festivities, you can still achieve this hot look at home with a few easy pieces:

  • Ladies: The nautical look is still going strong this season. Though white may be a bit bright for this upcoming Fall, you can always pair a navy and white striped top with a cropped blazer and some dark flare jeans for a sophisticated seaside look. Top it off with fiery red lipstick to add some sass to the outfit.
  • Gentlemen: A stark white suit is perfect for the summer; not so much for fall. Get a bit of nautical style in with a white polo paired with navy khakis. If you are feeling chilly, wrap yourself up in an argyle sweater.
