National Breast Cancer Awareness month was organized by a multitude of health focused charities to help raise money and bring more attention to Breast Cancer research. They also fervently advocate getting checked (both medically and utilizing self-check) as this is an elective procedure done usually at the request of the patient. Breast cancer is the #2 killer of women in America (#1 being heart disease). The usage of pink to symbolize the fight against breast cancer started in 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink looped ribbons to breast cancer survivors and family of the afflicted at Race for a Cure. Since then, pink has been the official color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Fun Fact: On Oct. 7, 2008, the White House was flooded in pink lights to raise awareness.
