Pet Spotlight: Meet Asha!

This is Asha, my year-old cat, aka Princess or as my brother calls her “Kaylee.” We’re not exactly sure of her breed, but it’s definitely some sort of mixed Siamese, maybe even Balinese because of her medium-length hair. My family adopted her in October 2009, mostly because I was tired of not having a kitty in my life. I had a cat named Whiskers until he disappeared in 2007 (may he rest in peace). She was adopted from Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary as “Princess” but unfortunately she was a sick kitten.
Asha had a condition called “ear polyps,” which causes severe damage to the eardrum if not properly treated. The symptoms are similar to those of an ear infection. In her first few months at home, we did notice that Asha tended to scratch at her left ear a lot. Luckily, Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary was nice enough to offer to pay for Asha’s surgery through donations and a fundraiser, so Asha had surgery to treat her condition in November 2009. Now she is a happy and healthy cat that loves to play.

I think Asha has a bit of a species crisis because she often acts like a puppy. I thought I was adopting a cat—but do catsnormally chew on stuff animals, roll in the dirt and destroy carpets? My cat has done all three. She is very curious, playful, and surprisingly social. She bites a lot, but I’ve come to see it as a sign of affection. They say cats are usually afraid of dogs, but I know of at least two dogs (one that is nine times her weight) that run away whenever she is around!
My cat has a pink collar with bells. Otherwise we’d never be able to find her, as she loves exploring outside! Her favorite cat toys are teasers with feathers and bubbles. Feel free to say hello in the comments below!
