Over the past few months, recalls by major automotive manufacturers has flagged a concern and anxiety among people around the world. On one hand, it is good to see a company take responsibility publicly for what has gone wrong but on the other, it is surprising to learn how auto manufacturers go wrong in the first place despite having multiple quality and performance checks at the plant. Clearly, Honda is among the elite group of automotive makers in the world and is known for its quality.

On February 9, 2010, Honda released a press statement on the subject why how and why it recalled driver’s airbags in cars delivered around 2001 and 2002. The company has offered a replacement airbag for all cars it produced around the same time. If you own an Accord, Civic, Odyssey or CR-V, the replacement airbag will be provided by the company at no extra cost.

Airbags are mandatory and standard among pretty much all cars now. The SRS airbags protect the driver and the co-passenger in an unfortunate event of a sudden braking or a head-on collision. Most airbags are automatic and open up depending on the speed of the braking of the vehicle.

Now, if you don’t own a Honda, there may be a couple of things you should know. Airbags need to be reset on a regular basis for any fault codes registered inside the bag. The resetting helps an airbag in timing itself and this can make a big difference to the driver and the co-passengers. Personally, I always get the airbags of my car checked during regular service and ensure that I always buy an OEM (Original equipment manufacturer) airbag. It is also sensible to check for the inflator inside. A damaged airbag inflator may cause the bag to rupture during opening, so make sure to have an Autosport jump starter inflator available.
