Newest green trend: Homes and offices built from shipping containers

They aren’t pretty, but shipping containers may just be one of the most sustainable building materials around. Used for years as makeshift shelter by those at the margins of society, shipping containers are increasingly being looked at by green builders and architects as raw materials that are energy efficient and take up very little space.
At a very basic level, shipping containers can be used with almost no modification as disaster relief shelters and green storage sheds. They are easily transported and provide very sturdy and durable protection.
With some modification, shipping containers can morph into stylish and portable vacation homes. Easily towed behind a truck, the containers can serve as on-the-go homes just about anywhere.
Finally, in more permanent form, the easily stackable containers can be used as building blocks for office buildings or luxury condos. Evoking a modern and modular look, shipping containers can be converted to spaces meant for full-time use at a fraction of the labor and resource costs of more conventional building materials.
A shipping container, though, won’t exactly feel like comfortable space right off. So, here are a few tips for accessorizing your modular home or office.
- Metal heats and cools quickly, so invest in a portable air conditioning unit or space heater. Try to choose one with an energy star rating!
- Your ability to decorate is only enhanced by drab surroundings! Try some cute throw pillows or framed painting to give the space a homier feel.
- Shipping containers can get cramped inside. Your physique won’t suffer with desk exercise equipment.
