Star Homes: A piece of Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers is a legendary comedian, whose stints on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and red carpet pre-awards shows cemented her in television memory. With the recently-released documentary “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” taking a look inside her life, let’s peek into her home as well to see how we can get a piece of Joan Rivers’ home décor style.

Joan Rivers bought and revamped her Connecticut country home in 2003 to suit her particular tastes. Emulating various landscapes ranging from English countryside estates to Vincent Van Gogh’s house in Giverny, Rivers’ home décor picks up on all sorts of rustic European influences. One particular highlight of her home is  a rarely-acknowledged source of interior inspiration – her hallway.Hallway. Photographed by Mary E. Nichols for Architectural Digest

The windows to the left are actually a trick of the eye or “trompe l’oeil” as the French say, depicting several homes of beloved friends and even a doggy companion. With a wall mirror positioned between each real and depicted window, the hallway implies a larger space, a handy tip for avoiding claustrophobia in small living spaces. Try it out in your own home to get a little star style on a budget!

Placing your best and fanciest furniture items at the end of the hallway as Rivers’ does with the chandelier is a great way to add a sense of drama to your living room. With the hallway serving as a red carpet walk to your loveliest furniture pieces, you can really spotlight some elegant furnishings. To get a classy chandelier such as the one depicted without breaking the bank, I recommend this candle chandelier styled in a similar manner as Rivers’ lighting.

One of Joan Rivers’ best rooms, unsurprisingly, is her master bedroom. Joan really goes all out in a romantic embrace with the light and fluffy shade of carnation pink. With an elaborate canopy bed and a French curtain valance, pink is certainly the essence of her room, but feel free to play around. In fact, by the window is a large white palm tree by the storage bench. Have fun with your own room and include something lighthearted like a palm tree lamp in your bedroom to express yourself. When planning a room, remember to consider a color scheme and go with it when picking out different elements of your interior. Master bedroom. Joan Rivers’ home in Connecticut is just bursts of colors all around and as dynamic as her own famous personality. The way she sticks to certain color schemes for different rooms is a great way for you to play around with your own furnishings at home and also unite different styles into one theme. Try it out next time you want to update your home!

When I saw her documentary, I wasn’t expecting to be affected as strongly as I was. It was really very touching, she has had some hard times in her life, and still manages to show up everyday and give it her all. I really respect her for that.

Interesting interior. For such a loud woman, I was expecting more lavish furniture choices.
