Shoe spotlight: Mary Janes

Mary Jane’s are arguably the most sought after shoe styles among young girls. This strap shoe or sandal is traditionally made for the little girls. However, these shoes are today designed for older women and have become quite a rage too.
What defines a pair of Mary Janes is the ‘bar’ – the single-buttoned strap running across the top of the foot. Originally worn by Mary Jane, the character from Buster Brown comic strip, this dainty style became very popular among the little girls. In fact, they were regarded as a must-have style for the girls. These shoes have always remained a classic favorite and in many cases, are considered as a staple for every girl’s childhood wardrobe.
From the classic symbol of innocence, the Mary Janes have transformed in to sexy staple shoe for the grown women’s wardrobes as
well. These shoes are characterized by a round shaped toe with a thick strap. The standard Women’s Mary Janes came in black with patent leather for the shiny look. But today, Mary Jane’s are known for their versatility. From an array of colors and materials to all possible styles, the designing of Mary Janes has changed a lot over the years.
These shoes carry a vintage appeal and today have plenty of variants. While the traditional ones still remain popular, everything from high-heeled Mary Janes to Mary Jane sneakers are all available to suit every woman’s personal style.
No longer just a shoe for little girls, Mary Janes have grown and changed, and are now as much a woman’s shoe as a child’s. With the changes and variations, many of today’s Mary Janes are so different from the classic look that they hardly resemble it at all!
