Best of the Web: Style Blogs of the Week No. 20
Style bloggers are visual creatures, conscious of fine details that your run-of-the-mill viewer (myself included!) might simply overlook. They are finely attuned to the compositions and colors that press the aesthetic button in a person’s head that says that looks good! Read on for photograph-conveyed style and “everything” inspiration, beauty tricks and tips supplemented by images, and videos courtesy of a new media artist’s site.
XOXO Parisky is dedicated to beauty. Whether it’s nails, makeup looks, reviews, or tutorials you’re looking for, this blog’s got it all. Blog Editor Helena’s “About Me” reads:
I love the little things in life that make you feel alive and beautiful! So a vivid makeup, nails, funky jewellery and clothes are essential to me. But it is not all about beauty! I love to read, learn new things and I can’t survive without music and something crafty to do.
Check out PerryPie’s Nail Polish Adventure for a veritable database of all the nail polishes that the Blog Editor owns, with a healthy side of whatever interesting picture she might have taken. She says:
When I got back into nail polish last year, my best friend, better known as StBFF on the blog, was out of town and I wanted to show her what I was wearing [by emails]. I figured, I’m already taking these pictures, why not post them somewhere so other fanatics could see and benefit from… And I also want my readers to get a little bit of me out of reading my blog, which was the idea behind Pic of the Moment. I wanted to give them something interesting that wasn’t just nail polish.
This nail polish aficionado makes her blog interactive through a feature where readers can pick what she wears.
A largely imaged based blog, Yes Jess shares things that make its eponymous creator laugh, images that she loves, or the music she’s listening to at that moment. The blog editor works in fashion and cites it as a huge inspiration for the blog. Her constant research means that she’s always coming across amazing stuff, and blogging is an easy way to compile thoughts and interests in one place. Jess says:
I think people follow my blog for the images. I use a wide variety of subjects so it makes it more exciting to check out everyday. I love fashion, but I am also into loads of other things. There are so many different fashion blogs, so this just makes it that little bit different.
If you prefer your pictures moving, then check out The New Pop. Launched in 2005 when there wasn’t really a vehicle where indie artist could get quality video coverage, New Pop creator began doing video docs of friends strictly for the web. This caught the attention of the downtown scene and soon after that the corporate world. New Pop’s creator, who cites New York as a main inspiration, has since shifted focus to reaching out to those who are still in the dark about this new kind of filmmaking, and tells us that
More than anything else I want people to appreciate the emerging viral filmmaker as the new kid on the block. Ironically my own films are secondary to that goal. Creatively I tend to either make my videos entirely for me, or I make them entirely for a client. When I find a happy medium in that spectrum I think my focus will shift from promoting the medium to promoting myself.
Happy viewing!
