A lot of people do not know much about dieting and nutrition because they did not learn the fundamentals of nutrition growing up. Until recently, nutrition isn’t something that a lot of parents talk about with their children. Nutrition is a very important part of our daily lives and something we should all be educated on. Most of our parents weren’t aware of all the nutrition facts we now have access to. Here are five main nutrition facts that your parents didn’t teach you.
Most Diets Don’t Work
Most diets do not work because when we think of the word “diet” we think of not eating. When you stop eating the correct amount of calories you lose muscle, you lose very little fat and you lose water weight which will give you a false reading on the scale. Most people that start diets do not monitor the amount of protein and carbohydrates their body needs. You need protein and carbohydrates in order to build muscle and muscle burns fat. An average female burn up to 45 calories a day per every 1 pound of muscle. The average male burns up to 65 calories a day per every 1 pound of muscle. So in order to effectively lose weight you need to keep your protein and carbohydrate intake up.
Proper eating is something that a lot of us didn’t learn while growing up. There has been a fast food craze over the past twenty years which has developed unhealthy eating habits among Americans. If you are trying to reduce your calorie intake to a healthy amount you should stay away from fast food and other high calorie unhealthy foods. The calories in fruit are generally low and offer the body nutrients and vitamins that are needed for a healthy lifestyle. Eating from all the necessary food groups will keep you healthy.
Drinking the recommended daily amount of water is a simple and quick way to maintain a healthy body. Drinking water offers the body so many amazing benefits. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water can help you lose weight. By drinking enough water you are flushing your body unnecessary fats and you reduce hunger. Dehydration is the number one cause of headaches and drinking water can decrease the number of headaches you get. Drinking the right amount of water is also beneficial for your outer beauty. When you stay hydrated your skin will become less dry and have a natural glow.
For several years people have thought that low-fat foods were better for the body. This isn’t always the case! You are better off eating whole wheat toast with butter than white bread with butter. Just because something says it is low-fat doesn’t necessarily make it better for you. If you want to eat low-fat foods you need to understand which ones are healthy and which ones aren’t. Eating whole grain pasta with a low fat sauce is better for you than normal pasta with a high calorie sauce. Eating a healthy diet and having a low fat sauce as a side is an easy way to limit your fat intake.
Most of our parents did not teach us how to eat or cook healthy – they were enjoying the invention of the microwave! Well sorry to say but the microwave doesn’t offer the healthiest form of cooking. Baking, grilling and boiling your foods offer the most nutritional value. Try to avoid frying your foods unless absolutely necessary.
