A blog review: Denim Therapy
I learned a great deal about fashion while living in Milan. One thing in particular stood out while studying fashion in the fashion capital of the world – the importance of denim jeans in American fashion. Denim jeans are the epitome of American style. When you think about American style, you probably think “Levi’s jeans and a white t-shirt.”
Jeans were originally designed for work. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis created the first American blue jeans in 1873. Since then, jeans have become a pivotal part of fashion in America as well as the rest of the world. Jeans are extremely durable, but still might need some care. And that includes all of the jeans I own.
I have a few pairs of jeans that I will not give up on, even though they have multiple holes and frayed hems. I started looking for a place to get my jeans repaired because I knew that eventually I’d have to get mine fixed. And that’s when I came across Denim Therapy. This company is all about fixing up those blue jeans that are so near and dear to us. In fact, the first paragraph on the Denim Therapy About page says “The Denim Therapy Company was created in 2006 with the goal to fix any hole, hem, or broken denim regardless of damage severity. And to do so with unconditional love, carefully repairing all denim as if it was our own.”
I am absolutely sending my jeans in here. I sent the blog’s representative and editor, Michelle Christina Larsen, some questions to learn more about the company and the blog. Enjoy the interview and tell all your friends that this place is the place to get your jeans fixed!
How was Denim Therapy started?
“Denim Therapy started out of necessity. Founder, Francine Rabinovich, had a favorite pair of jeans that she loved, and wasn’t willing to let go of them once they became too damaged to wear. She decided to find a solution. She began a service that uses a unique color-matching system, Match Perfect (TM) thread selection, to repair holes and worn spots in jeans. Eventually services such as zippers, belt loops, and hem repair emerged, along with waistline adjustments for pregnancy.
“Of that, our blog was born—a full spectrum of the latest and greatest in the denim industry, from trend reports to event coverage and street style.”
What is the most rewarding thing about being a part of Denim Therapy?
“We love being able to reunite people with their favorite pair of jeans that otherwise would have been lost to the cut-off shorts pile. Our crotch, knee, hem and zipper repairs help our customers look their best and get the most mileage out of the jeans they love. And with our blog and social networking extensions, we’re able to stay in touch with our customers before, during, and after the process. We love that.”
What are your favorite and least favorite denim trends?
“We’re really loving paneled denim, with contrasting washes and even leather cut-outs. Denim work shirts, which can be completely casual and then suddenly converted to uptown-chic, are another favorite. If we had to pick one thing we’re really not sure about… it’s probably “jeggings”. But we don’t mind them on Conan O’Brien!”
What are the most flattering denim looks for men and women, in your opinion? Eg skinny jeans, denim jackets, etc.
“Right now the emerging wide-leg pant is a hit for women. It looks great with tailored jackets and has a slimming effect on many body types. We’re still pretty much addicted to skinny jeans, and the boyfriend jean is a great casual look that can translate to downtown nightlife-cool with the right pair of shoes.
“We love seeing guys in raw denim. We’re also seeing great updated takes on the classic denim jacket (think panels, washes, fur linings) and cargos, skinnies with cuffed hems, and creative silk screening/top stitching detail, as per Diesel’s Spring 2011 line. Denim right now is about keeping the classics in place and pushing the boundaries of what we usually wear. There is so much room for experimentation and creativity—Rag & Bone’s denim cape, for instance, is a perfect example of this.”
What are some of the factors leading to the success of Denim Therapy?
“Above all, our success is based on denim expertise with online convenience and exceptional customer service. Our customers and readers have an intense love of denim, and that passion is what drives us. We all have a favorite pair of jeans that we wear until they fall right off, and retiring them means serious separation anxiety. But because of Denim Therapy, you stay united!
“Through our blog we’re able to reach out to those denim-crazed consumers who we relate to so well, and really connect with them. We do more than just repair their jeans, we inform them of news, inspire them with beautiful editorials, and hold interactive contests and events for them to have fun.
“Our blog is a cool place for denim lovers to hang out and engage their passion with pages and pages of news, trend reports, shopping round-ups, and more. It’s easy for them to catch what’s new and exciting in denim. This is why our customers and readers keep coming back for more.”
