Go all ‘Black Swan’ for prom

Having trouble in planning a chic and yet statement-piece gown for prom night? Why not take inspiration from Academy Award-winning “Black Swan”? The movie, starring the lovely Natalie Portman, has already given the fashion world a good shake. The Darren Aronofsky-directed thriller showcases ballet inspired outfits that are absolutely to die for.
Natalie Portman stars as ambitious ballerina Nina in this flick. As fashion takes a literal route, prima ballerina plumes dresses and noir gossamer tulle take center stage through designers like J. Mendel and Oscar de la Renta. The ballerina style is reinvented, keeping the focus on dark metamorphic aspects that complement the theme of the story.
Debutant designer Eva Chen, who debuted as the costume designer in the movie, dominated the Vancouver Fashion Week with her wedding couture collection. Inspired with Tiaras and ballet fashion, Black Swan is a blend of gothic, dark inspired styles.
Designers from Ralph Lauren to Jason Wu have been inspired by this ballet style. The Sue Wong feather dress line a great pick for emulating the movie. To get this look you need to focus on dramatic makeup. Another vital aspect is to make sure that you use a corset-inspired outfit. This creates a slimmer silhouette and helps flatter body shapes too.
For the Black Swan look you can try feather dresses with vivid eye makeup and illuminating head pieces. The Mandalay overall dress comes with dark feathers and gives a snug fit. It has a dramatic sweetheart neckline and a flattering cinched waist. You can pair it with metallic sandals to brighten the look, and add a pretty, eye-catching feather headband – this’ll turn heads, but won’t make you look like you’re dressing for Halloween.
For the White Swan style, feather prom dresses are similarly appropriate. The Su Wong strapless feather dress (pictured above, leftmost) is even more dazzling with the addition of sparkling rhinestones. Opulent ostrich feathers finish the outfit and absolutely channel The Swan Princess. The fitted style has pleats at the bodice and has a flattering empire waist. Pick a jewel encrusted tiara or hair piece to finish in style.
