Best of the Web: Style Blogs of the Week no. 34
Art? Boutiques? Fashion advice? Sewing patterns (for the crafty fashionistas)? It’s all in this week’s Best of the Web.
1. Fashion boutiquizing: Woosters
When playing the fashion game, style mavens will tell you one winning strategy is to diversify. Maybe you have your beloved online catalogues, ebay sellers and brick-and-mortar boutiques, but it’s never too late to add another store to your repertoire. Woosters is an online ladies’ fashion boutique that stocks collections for every occasion, with a current emphasis on airy, feminine pieces (think floral print dresses and delicate draping). The UK-based clothing store tells us: “Our blog is updated on a weekly basis and is written by our member of our sales team so she knows intimately the products she is writing about.”
2. Shopaholics (not) Anonymous: “Alyson is Neat“
This personal fashion and lifestyle blog has an interesting perspective, from the point of view of a struggling shopaholic whose addiction has shaped the way she lives and shops. Says the eponymous blog creator, “I share my experiences of how to navigate being fashionable while still being on a budget.”
3. Amazing Art: Heather Page Studios blog
Get a behind-the-scenes look at New Brunswick-based Heather Page Studios, which specializes in hyper-realistic pencil drawings, such as the portrait of the cat above. Heather tells us:
I started my blog as an accessory to my website. It’s a place where people can go to learn a little bit about me and my work. It’s a place where I can post news about my work and show the different stages of a piece, from beginning to end.
What makes it interesting, as Heather aptly notes, is that
People often don’t know how a drawing or painting comes to be, so [the blog] allows them to see how the colours or shades are filled in and what method I use to create each drawing. It’s nice when the drawing is complete and they can flip through the different stages, one after the other.
And hopefully after reading my blog, they feel like they know me a little better.
4. Go ahead, plug in: “Ruby’s View“
We asked Ruby Woo of “Ruby’s View” to tell us what the site’s all about:
Ruby’s View is an interactive blog that tells you everything you need to know about anything fashionable. Expect updates on runway trends, celebrity fashion and high street styles. You will get smart advice on key investment pieces and general tips on how to dress for a date or for the summer with budget-friendly options.
5. Sew cool: Only-Ladies.com
Designing a dress yourself? Try Only-Ladies.com, a site that offers unique and never seen before sewing patterns.
6. Your daily creative journey: “Jennifer Inspired“
Illustrator/graphic designer Jennifer Maroney takes the humble task of journaling to an art form – or is that art to journaling form? We’ll let her explain:
How did you get started?
A few years ago I found myself missing being involved within an art community like I was in college and I was feeling creatively stuck and isolated. Then I stumbled into a few art and creativity blogs, read some wonderful books, rediscovered my love for art journaling, and pretty soon I was wanting a “cyber” place of my own!
What do you hope people will gain from it?
Mainly, I’d like anyone who finds my blog to be able to… become more creative themselves… Because, above all else, this is an expression of my authentic and genuine soul… Because that really is what blogs like mine are — tiny windows that let you see glimpses into other people’s studios of spirit, heart and dreams.
