A blog interview: She Speaks Bark
A couple weeks ago I found a very inspirational blog revolving around a woman’s passion for animals and shelter dogs. I checked out the bios on her two dogs and immediately fell in love! Kaitlin has spent significant time studying animal behavior and shares her insight with us in her blog, She Speaks Bark. I had the opportunity to interview her here!
How did your blog, She Speaks Bark, come to be?
I started SheSpeaksBark in August of 2009 after receiving many calls and emails from family and friends wanting advice on caring for their pets or resolving various behavior issues. The most logical solution for me was to start a blog where everyone could access the same information and respond through comments with questions or feedback in one large forum. At the time, I never imagined it would evolve into giveaways, product reviews, etc but we’ve been loving all the updates and changes as we grow.
In your blog you talk about working with shelter dogs for 6 years. What is the best thing about being around shelter dogs?
Shelter dogs are so supremely grateful, and that is certainly the best thing about them. They are grateful for the smallest things in life, like a warm bed to lie on, and seeing that appreciation from an animal really helps to keep things in perspective in my own life. Knowing the trials and troubles that a lot of shelter dogs have gone through prior to their arrival at the shelter is hard, but seeing how these animals can still be trusting and loving creatures after their hardships is truly one of life’s great lessons.
You mention being a huge fan of books on dogs. What is the #1 book you recommend for animal lovers?
I don’t think you know how hard of a questions this is! I would have to say that “Lost and Found” by Elisabeth Hess is my favorite and most highly recommended book. Its about an author who’s life is changed through volunteer work at her local animal shelter.
What would you say is the most rewarding part of your blog?
I absolutely love reader feedback the most. Knowing someone out there is reading my advice and/or thoughts and getting a takeaway message that applies in their own life is an amazing feeling.
I enjoyed reading the bios on your two dogs, Bear and Scooter. Both have overcome hardships and have very inspiring stories to share. Are there any lessons your dogs have taught you about life?
More than anything, my boys have taught me to laugh at myself. Not to take things too seriously. They’ve forced me out of my comfort zone in so many ways and helped me to grow more confident as a person. Owning a dog is a great way to meet new people, and expand your horizons. They’re always there to greet me at the end of a long day, and no matter how I feel that night, they can bring a smile to my face.
I’m a huge dog lover and I have really enjoyed reading her blog. She also does product and book reviews! I just finished a mini shopping spree for my own furry friend purchasing treats and a new adjustable dog harness. Next time I have one of these, I’ll make sure to check out her product reviews. If you want to learn more about Kaitlin and what she does check out her blog!
