How to carve the perfect pumpkin this Halloween
There are some pretty ridiculous pumpkin carvers out there. For those of us who aren’t as naturally gifted at making awesome jack o lanterns, a pumpkin carving stencil or template is necessary. This Halloween you can really impress your trick or treaters with some interesting and creative jack o lanterns. You can find pumpkin carving stencils in pumpkin carving kits as well as for free online. There are only two things (besides the pumpkin!) that you need to create your own super cool jack o lantern:
- Pumpkin carving stencil: Once you have your pumpkin and have found what you want to carve into it you need a stencil as a guide where to cut. There are a number of great ideas and examples online if you can’t think of what you want your jack o lantern to look like. Once you have your pumpkin stencil you can put it on the pumpkin. Use something sharp like a thumbtack and poke holes through the stencil to make an outline of it on the pumpkin.
- Tools: First you will need a big kitchen knife to open the top of the pumpkin up. Then you will need a big spoon to scoop out all of the pumpkin seeds. In order to carve the outside of the pumpkin you can either use tools you have around the house like small knives or even power tools. Exacto knives also work well because they are very small and very sharp. However, most people will be fine with a pumpkin carving kit that you can buy from the grocery store. They usually come with small etching tools and carving tools which look like mini saws.
One last tip is to put petroleum jelly on the parts of the pumpkin that you carved to help preserve it for as long as possible. If you don’t it will start drying out. Now you have everything you need to create the scariest looking jack o lantern to display for Halloween!
