The myth of computer memory and storage

When put to the question of how much computer memory and hard drive space one needs for their new computer or laptop they plan on buying, many must stop to think. Unless you are a technology whiz, chances are that most are not quite sure about their storage and memory needs. But aren’t they the same thing? The answer may surprise you.

Myth of computer storage and memory

One of the most common misconceptions in the computer world are that computer memory and hard drive space are the same, while in fact, they represent two very different critical computer qualities that are paramount to one’s purchasing decision. Customizable laptops are all the rage, but before you go out and spend your hard earned money you need to figure out what your requirements and needs are for memory and hard disk space as they are two of the most important factors in terms of both quality and price.

Hard drive space

When most think of computer memory or disk size, they are thinking of the hard drive which is where most files are stored. Most personal computers and laptops are advertised by their hard drive space, with numbers ranging anywhere from 16 GB to 1 TB (which is equivalent to 1000 GB). Anytime you create, save, or install a file like a document or a music file it is stored directly on your hard disk. Therefore, hard disk space becomes an important buying point for an individual who plans on storing a lot of data, such as a music DJ storing all of their thousands of songs. Unless your occupation requires more disk space, a laptop 1 terabyte HD is all anyone would need in a personal computer.

Computer memory

In contrast, computer memory refers to random access memory or RAM in your computer. This is the physical part of the computer where computer processes and operations are being run. Unlike the hard drive, the RAM can be accessed much more quickly and allows the computer to constantly store and run active programs and processes. Without sufficient RAM, you computer will either run programs extremely slow or maybe not at all, making the RAM size of a computer very important for someone who is running many programs at once.  Most personal computers come with at least 2 GB of RAM, but for those looking for a kick, 4 to 8 GB of RAM will ensure you have no memory problems in the future.
