Dress of summer 2012: The one shoulder draped dress
Out of all the designer dresses coming out for the summer that look uncomfortable, over-embellished, gaudy, and constricting, we at Be In Style love the simplicity and elegance of the one shoulder draped dress, and have thus crowned it our dress of choice for the summer.
This dress is not to be confused with a regular one shoulder dress (shown left) which can be fitted and nipped at the waist. A one shoulder draped dress is flowly, is commonly made of satin or silk, and gives off an air of grace characteristic of an Egyptian or Greek goddess. This dress is great for the summer because it is lightweight, allows for air to pass through, and only needs a pair of heels and earrings to be completed. No one wants to over-accessorize during the summer – wearing too many necklaces, bracelets, or other pieces will make you feel hot and itchy.
The one shoulder draped dress is very versatile in that it can be worn to special events like summer weddings, work events, clubs, and summer date nights. Stars like Kim Kardashian and Lauren Conrad have made this dress a staple in their wardrobes, and have given us inspiration on how we should choose our dress color, how to choose a complementing hairstyle (like an updo!), and how to accessorize it. It takes a certain look and attitude to pull off the one shoulder draped dress, but we guarantee you that people will notice!
Some great brands for one shoulder draped dresses are EXPRESS, BCBG Maxazria, Rachel Zoe, and Pamela Roland. Also, St John knits are comfortable and often available in one shoulder draped dresses. Once you’ve found your dress, you’re probably wondering on how to accessorize it. As we’ve said earlier, we believe less is more for this dress! We would only pair this dress with two types of accessories – a pair of dangly earrings, and a thick bracelet.
Since a lot of brands and stores showcase bronze and gilded designs during the summer, we recommend metallic gold and copper tones when choosing your accessories. They let the dress be your main fashion statement, but still complement it by adding a bit of shine. A gold cuff bracelet (shown left) would be a great investment as it complements not only your dress, but any other summer outfit you want to spruce up.
However you choose to wear your one shoulder draped dress, know that you have made a daring and fierce fashion choice! Share with us below on what you like to pair with your dress.
