Choose a sweetheart dress this prom season
Prom dresses are one of the most exciting things for girls to choose. I remember my extensive preparation before buying my prom dress when I was in high school. I browsed tons of prom dress websites researching all the different dress styles and colors that were currently in, and printing out and saving my favorites. If I could give any advice to those shopping for a prom dress right now, it would be this: Pick a sweetheart prom dress!
Both dresses I had picked for my Jr. Prom and Senior ball were long gowns that were too mature and serious, and if I could go back I would choose a fun, short sweetheart dress that fit the beautiful seasons of spring and summer. Here’s why:
Comfort and Cut
Sweetheart dresses are typically strapless like the Trixxi strapless sweetheart dress with a ruffled skirt to the right. Why be constricted and bundled up when the weather is beautiful and you want to tear it up on the dance floor? The cut is very comfortable, and will make it easier to shuffle in and out of your date’s car or group’s limo. The bodice is structured, ending at your natural waistline to frame your body nicely. The skirt is where you can get creative! It can either be fitted to hug your hips, ruched, ruffled, or have an A-line tulle skirt (shown above, middle). If it does get chilly near the end of the night, a light cardigan or jacket can complement the dress and be a powerful fashion statement.
Remember how I said sweetheart dresses were fun and bright? That’s because their cut lets them use almost any kind of fabric! They can come in silk, polyester, satin, or any other mixture of fabric with bright patterns, colors, and prints. Popular patterns and prints include the following:
- Bright, loud, and edgy prints (shown above, left)
- Floral prints
- Mix of different fabric textures with beading, threading, feathers, or sequins (shown above, middle)
- Mix of different colors
Girls silk dresses are also popular during prom season, since silk is light and airy, and is great to use for cocktail dresses. Silk is typically used in sweetheart dresses, wrapping around the waist to tie into a bow in the back (shown above, right).
Whichever type of sweetheart dress you choose, know that you have a lot to choose from since it is the most popular kind of prom dress. Happy dress hunting!
