Bringing the 50’s look back
The retro look is making waves this season. Do you remember John Travolta in the movie “Grease”? He sported a retro look, complete with black leather jacket and dark-colored jeans. If you want to go with the 50’s look, take a look at some clothing tips here:
The 50’s and 60’s had a relaxed look but a great deal of attention was given to detailing. You’d look right at home with well-tailored trousers, checked or pinstripe shirts and double-breasted jackets or parka jackets. Trousers were predominantly dark-colored at the workplace while lighter-colored pants were worn by the younger crowd. The preppie look was very much a part of the 50’s look with cardigan sweaters and lace-up shoes.
For the John Travolta look that was more a street style casual retro look, go with a black jacket. And if you want the look to be completely authentic, it has to be a leather jacket that’s not too long. Or you can go with cheap varsity jackets like the Obey Clothing Keith Haring jacket. It’s made out of wool and polyester with a chest patch and embroidery at the back. Also check out other cheap varsity jackets like the Nike Practice OT jacket in black that has a full-zip in the front that can be left open.
Wear a white, crew-cut t-shirt tucked into the pants. Roll up the sleeves of the not-too-loose t-shirt and wear dark-colored pants or jeans. You can fold the jeans at the bottom and wear a belt with a dark buckle. For a complete turnabout, you can even sport the 50’s cowboy look with buttoned-up embroidered shirts with a simple string tie at the neck.
Go with black shoes and white socks or sneakers like Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes in black. Lace-up black shoes with leather lining and eyelets were in during the 50’s.
