David Yurman and the twisted cable
David Yurman Inc. is a jewelry design company whose pieces are recognized for their unmistakable twisted cable design. David Yurman has experienced amazing success since the 1980s and is regularly featured in high-end lifestyle magazines including Vogue, Harpar’s Bazaar, and Town and Country with talent like Jon Kortajarena and supermodel Kate Moss. The brand has become so successful that it has extended outside of jewelry and watches to include David Yurman fragrances, which are created with a similar complexity of the jewelry. Some of the particularly successful collections from David Yurman include the Silver Ice collection, the Buckle collection, and the X collection. Needless to say, David Yurman is recognized as a high-end designer of unique and modern jewelry.
This hasn’t always been the case, though. Before David Yurman the company, there existed David Yurman, the man. Born in Long Island, New York, he took a liking to sculpting in his youth. He explored and developed his craft under such names as Ernesto Gonzalez, Jacques Lipshitz, and Theodore Rozack. After one year of college at New York University, Yurman dropped out and hitchhiked to California to follow his bohemian spirit. There he found the beatnik colony of artists in Big Sur. In the late 1960s, he returned to New York and took root in Greenwich Village.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that Yurman first made a name for himself with the cable bracelet that is now a definitive piece in his works. As you can plainly see, the name “David Yurman” has not always been synonymous with wealth and posh. In fact, the origins of the company’s designs stem from a bohemian sculptor. His unique style has had such an impact that you can easily find David Yurman inspired jewelry that recreates the distinct twisted cable design.
