Sofa beds for Thanksgiving guests
Like the phantoms that visited Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, there are three stages to a holiday dinner:
- The Past – Inviting friends and family over and preparing the meal.
- The Present – Eating the meal and sharing holiday cheer while filling up.
- The Future – Cleaning up and heading home with bellies full.
Most people are familiar with Past and Present, but they overlook the Future. When all is said and done after a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, guests will float about catching up and imbibing on spirits for a bit, but when that’s all done with, the party has to come to a close. As a host, you may come across the ponderous problem of the guest who, rather than leaving with the rest, will haunt your home ‘til the morning time. It may be that the tryptophane in the turkey has tuckered him out, or may be that he indulged in one too many glasses of eggnog. Whatever the case, you’ve a situation on your hands.
When you have an unexpected guest, it’s enough of a kindness to provide a roof for them to sleep under, but you wouldn’t be a proper host without providing some kind of sleeping accommodation. Luckily, the issue of providing a cot is a relatively simple one to resolve. If you’re fortunate enough to have a spare guest bedroom, then you really haven’t got a problem to begin with. If, however, your home is on the smaller side and doesn’t have obvious accommodations, there is a simple and space-conserving solution to house lingering guests: sofa beds.
Many people have the misconception that sofa beds are an uncomfortable and unnecessary option for sleeping, but that’s likely because they haven’t thought it through. Any guest would prefer sleeping on a bed than a couch regardless of the fact that the bed is a fold out. Don’t deny your guests a comfortable night just because of the unfounded thought that a convertible sofa sleeper is somehow inferior to a dedicated sofa. Nobody will know the difference between a sofa with the ability to transform and a sofa that lacks said ability until the time arises when you need a bed. Then they’ll see it as a mighty boon rather than shoddy furnishing decision.
The overnight holiday guest is a not a common occurrence, but it’s one you should keep in mind. Sofa beds do well to serve their primary purpose as sofas, and are an excellent space-saving solution. They add a very practical versatility to your home, and there is no instance where you’ll regret purchasing a sofa bed rather than a sofa.
