Is my engagement ring the right size?

5 carat diamond ring, average engagement ring size

Kelly Clarkson recently announced her engagement to fiance Brandon Blackstock and displayed a gigantic yellow canary diamond ring haloed by smaller diamonds a day later during the VH1 Divas concert on December 16. Some say you can’t put a price on love, but the number of blog posts wondering whether Kelly’s ring is too big points that size can and does matter. An engagement ring is as much a public statement as a private declaration of love. So what’s average, then?

A diamond engagement ring it doesn’t have to be a 20 carats (like Kim Kardashian’s infamous ring from ex-husband Chris Humphries) to be perfect. Cut, color, and clarity are three other considerations in the “4 Cs of diamonds” (carat, of course, refers to gem weight). A well-cut diamond can sparkle more beautifully and look larger than a poorly cut diamond that’s larger.

In case you were wondering, though, The Wedding Report said in 2011 that the average engagement ring size is 1.18 carats, or between .5 carats and 1.5 carats. Average diamond size is regional, too: 2 carat diamond rings are found more frequently in New York than Missouri!

And here are some of 2012′s impressive celebrity engagement rings:

Angelina Jolie’s 16 carat emerald cut diamond, given to her by Brad Pitt in April 2012 and designed by Robert Procop. This baby cost an estimated $250,000!

Jennifer Aniston’s oval diamond engagement ring, estimated around 12 and 18 carats in weight, given to her by Justin Theroux in August 2012.

Snooki (Nicole Polizzi) of Jersey Shore fame has a 5 carat diamond ring, consisting of a 3.2 carat center cut diamond with a 2 carat diamond eternity band, given to her by Jionni Lavalle.

Miley Cyrus’s 2.5 carat cusion-cut diamond ring from Neil Lane, with art nouveau diamond floral motifs engraved throughout the sides.

Blake Lively’s $2 million dollar light pink oval diamond ring with pave diamonds and rose gold, given to her by husband Ryan Reynolds.
