Have real toys this Christmas with H.O. train sets
There was a time when kids would ask for real toys from Santa for Christmas. Nowadays, you’ll find more requests for tablets, smart phones, laptops, and video games. These are great gifts and electronics provide for countless hours of fun and learning, but there’s a certain amount of Christmas cheer that becomes wanting when all the best gifts come on a screen though. In simpler times, Christmas was a time when homes were littered with wrapping paper and brand new toys; the kids would run around the house or neighborhood showing off the latest additions to their toy chests and parents would bustle about the house cleaning up and preparing for Christmas dinner.
It may be that the kids in your family have grown too old for NERF guns, LEGOs, action figures, and Barbie dolls, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have toys about the house during Christmas time. One of the very best toys people used to give out for Christmas was the model train. Even though it may not be the best gift you could give nowadays, you’ll be hard pressed to find anybody who won’t find a train set in your home to be the most charming bit of Christmas décor. It used to be that model train sets were very pricey and would be played with all year around, but since they are no longer such a hot item to be played with all year-round, you can find great cheap train sets that will make a great addition to your host of traditional Christmas decorations.
The most elaborate manner that you can feature a train set in your home is having its track circle about a holiday village. Holiday villages are miniature villages populated with gingerbread houses, miniature denizens, and snow-capped trees. Every winter village is different, but snowy and Christmas themes are a great way to get people thinking about the Holidays. You can include whatever it is you like in your own, whether it’s Santa and his reindeer waiting for elves pack up his sled or the mean old Grinch hopping rooftops. Making gingerbread houses for your holiday village with the entire family is a great wintertime activity and you can showcase their handiwork for all your guests.
The holidays are a time for coming together, and a cheap model train set is a fun and easy way to bring everybody together at least for a small time. Give your nieces and nephews a tour of your holiday village. Speculate with cousins what kind of cargo each compartment of the train might be hauling; it could be candy canes or it could be lumps of coal. Have an in-depth discussion with your aunties and uncles on the techniques you used to make the faux snow look so realistic and how they might have a holiday village in their home next year.
The holiday village with scale model train set is a great dynamic talking piece and a proper distraction if you’re trying to grab somebody’s attention or curiosity away from a glowing television or tablet screen.
