Essential garments for casual menswear

When you were a boy, essentials were the easiest thing in the world. Outside of your gym shorts, you would need one pair of clean jeans, a few white t-shirts , and a sweater or two. Color is not so important because you’re just a kid then. You can wear whatever you like when you’re young and you can wear it every day of the week without anybody making a peep. Once you have matured a bit though – when you’ve landed that first real job and business casual becomes commonplace rather than occasional – that’s when you will come to realize that your attire, tidiness and overall appearance will play a part in how you are perceived (particularly since you’ll be wearing work clothes the majority of the time when you’re in the office).

Color is still acceptable, but that the wild hues and bold tones of yesteryear are something you may want to depart with. Instead, there are a few base colors that your wardrobe should gravitate around: white, gray, black, brown, and blue. While these colors should form the lion’s share of your clothes, you shouldn’t shy away from a bit of spark with brighter and fun colors.

In addition to the change in color scheme of your wardrobe, you’ll have to pieces to your set of casual clothes. Jeans and tees simply don’t cut it anymore. Among your new set of casual work clothes should be a pair of khakis, polo shirts, and long-sleeved button ups. Navy blue polo shirts are a great starting point, but again, you can explore colors you like and include a wide variety of colored polo shirts, if that’s to your liking. Being older doesn’t necessarily mean you should throw out all sense of color and freedom. It simply means that there are a new set of rules for acceptability and you have to find the proper way to get around them.
