Although we have now found ourselves at the end of January, the beauty of the winter wonderland season is still flourishing. Although skiing is an extremely popular sport, it is not the only activity you can partake in while in the snow, or you may be looking for something new to try.  Depending on your interests, there are a number of different activities you can chose to try instead of common ski pastime. However, in order to enjoy this beautiful and magical season you need to make sure you are prepared. We’ve put together a guide of the most fun alternative snow activities and the gear you need for them.

What started as an essential accessory for hunters thousands of years ago has developed into a recreational activity. The idea behind the design is that when you increase the surface area of your shoe then you will not sink into the snow as easily. This is a great way to go exploring in nature beyond the resort crowds. Some places even have snowshoe trails that lead you to incredible views. Depending on the experience you want, aluminum snowshoes allow you to move quicker through the snow, while wooden snowshoes are quieter and more traditional, allowing you to have a more relaxed experience.

Although there was a recent article in the New York Times that stated that snowboarding has slowly been decreasing in popularity, it is still a great way to experience the slopes that is different than skiing. If you are interested in trying the sport we suggest signing up for a lesson so you have an experienced snowboarder get you started, that way you do not get stuck on a mountain frustrated. When it comes to gear, most places have board and snow shoe rentals, however if you want to continue practicing the sport you might want to consider investing in some gear. If you are unsure though, start with a pair of shoes, like the Nike snow shoes. These are great for your board because the structure gives you plenty of support and the outsole gives you a great grip for when you strap into the board. At the same time, if you end up deciding that snowboarding is not your sport, then they work as a great pair of general shoes to wear in the snow; for you to walk around comfortably and not worry about slipping on ice.

Snow tubing/sledding

This is a great activity for kids and adults. All you need is an inexpensive plastic sled or snow inner tube and a hill and you have hours of laughs and fun.
