How slim or wide should your tie go?
Should you go for a slim tie or a wide tie? This question usually pops out on men’s clothing forums and leads some to long debates. The wrong thing about online discussions is the way questions are being framed. Most men would ask about the recent fashion trends or thoughts on skinny ties. How skinny should it be? Do you prefer wide ties over slim ties? While these questions are valid inquiries, the ultimate question is often overlooked. Is there a rule of thumb in choosing the width of your neck tie?
Most of the guys would agree that that they don’t really mind how they look on a certain width of tie. Some would just think about the color to match the suit and long sleeves. Some don’t know that the width of the tie matters in achieving the best look and fit in the suit. The simple rule: The widest point of your tie should match the widest point of your lapel. Are you surprised? Don’t worry, most guys are. We understand that no one has enough time to think about this stuff. But if it’s this easy to remember, it should be considered everytime you are dressing up for work or for a formal gathering.
If your coat has 2” lapel, this automatically means you should wear a tie with 2” at its widest point. Although this is recommended to follow, this is not an exact science so you can mismatch if you want. But if you are aiming for a more balanced look, apply this rule and it should not fail you. Remember: match your tie with the suit and not the other way around. Choose your suit first before picking the right tie. This should be something obviously logical. With the right combination of colors and accessories, obtaining a classier image should just be a piece of cake.
