Cosco Car Seat- Keeping My Babies Safe And Comfy

September is the National Baby Safety Month- a pretext to figure out how we can keep our babies safe. As a parent, one of my greatest fears is that one of my children will meet with an accident and become disabled. Soon after my son Neel was born, we had bought a Cosco car seat for him to prevent such an incident.

Ash and I had researched extensively before we settled with this choice. We wanted a good quality car seat that didn’t cost us a fortune. The car seat that we bought for Neel was the Cosco Astra convertible car seat pattern. It had a 5-point harness with an up-front harness adjustment to keep our baby safe. The four harness heights allowed us to adjust the car seat as Neel grew up. The car seat was padded, contoured and also had two reclining positions for baby’s comfort. This ensured that he was comfy. I could keep Neel seated in the rear facing position even after he had crossed 1 year (which is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics). All the features of the Cosco car seat met the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards. Neel was always content and happy when he was seated in it.

Neel was around eighteen months when my daughter Nina was born. We now needed another car seat. We realized that Neel was growing up really fast. We were absolutely satisfied with the Cosco car seat so we decided to buy another one of the same brand. However, this time we decided to buy a car seat that could be used till Neel was old enough to wear the safety belt. Thus we bought the Alpha Omega Paloma convertible car seat.

The advantage of this car seat was that you could graduate from the infant mode (the baby between 5-35 lbs is seated in a rear-facing position) to the toddler mode (front facing position for toddlers between 22-50 lbs) to the booster mode (for children between 40- 100 lbs). Like the Cosco Astra, this car seat also had a 5-point harness, The headrest can be easily adjusted without re-threading the harness. It also has three reclining positions, an infant head support, toddler pillow and pivoting armrests to keep the child comfortable. We have not discarded Neel’s earlier car seat. His sister Nina is now using it.

You will rarely find a toddler who doesn’t like going outside. My little baby, Nina, simply loves going to the playground to play. Though she’s too young to engage in social games, the sight of older children playing fascinates her. She loves tugging at the soft grass, running around and crawling on the grass and chasing after her ball.

Whenever Nina goes to the park, she insists on wearin g her Black Keds – the Kids Charlie MJ Tod/Pre Shoes. It is almost synonymous with her visit to the park. Not a day goes by, when she doesn’t drag me to the shoe closet and point at the shoes. This is her way of telling me that it’s “park-time”. The black Keds are her favorite shoe and rightfully so. It is an extremely comfortable casual Mary Jane slip on. It has a wide elasticized instep strap and striped fabric collar. Its outter-sole is designed to provide a grip so the baby does not slip on flat surfaces. The shoe is cushioned so as to make it soft and comfy for every baby step.

Another favorite is her Bonnie Jean toddler girls striped outfit. She simply loves to put on the knitted hoodie sweater dress on her trips to the park. Its top has pink and dark brown stripes with a jeweled flower on the chest. It also has a thick pink ribbed band at the waist with a pink bow attached. Dark brown leggings with an elastic waistband accompany the sweater and to complete the stylish look.

I’ll try not to be biased but the truth is that whenever Nina wears this ensemble, she looks the cutest of all the kids at the playground! It’s a joy just to watch her laugh and play in the fresh air on the playground.

Infant cradles “rock” baby to sleep

Like all new parents, I wanted my baby to have the best of everything – the most comfy and cute clothes, age-appropriate toys, and the most comfortable and safe baby furniture. I had already bought the baby clothes. The toys could wait till she was more responsive, say about, one month old. I had decided that initially Nina would share the bed with us. However, I soon realized that the infant cradle was one purchase that I couldn’t put off. Nina always wanted to be on the move. She hated lying still for long. She always cried to be picked up and carried around. She even had to be rocked to sleep in my arms every time she woke up at night- that was about once every 90 minutes! This was taking a toll on my health. One thing was for sure, Nina did not have motion-sickness!

My husband and I realized that an infant cradle would at least reduce the strain at bedtimes. Nina obviously deserved the very best cradle that we could afford, so we started researching on which cradle to buy. That was when we realized the numerous choices that were available to us. We haven’t regretted the decision so far. On the contrary, the cradle’s been a blessing in disguise as Nina now goes to sleep faster and for longer.

I was absolutely ecstatic. My sister, Ria, had just delivered a baby girl – the first baby of the next generation. We were planning to throw a party to celebrate as soon as the baby (yet to be named) was brought home. We also needed to take a photograph of the four generations- my 71 year old grandmother, 51 year old mother, 26 year old sister and my newborn niece! We were expecting our extended family in the neighborhood to attend the party.

However, before all that, we had decided to prepare Ria’s house for the homecoming. She left for the hospital in such a hurry that her house was a mess. Ria’s husband was with her at the hospita, so we cleaned her house and the baby’s room for them. Luckily, Ria had already bought some of the essentials for the baby because she would be discharged only the next day.

I was feeling absolutely restless after seeing the baby. I had already bought her a few dresses as a present but that just did not seem sufficient. For the lack of anything better to do, I started browsing the internet for presents to buy for the baby. That was when I came across the perfect gift idea – baby diamond earrings. Educate yourself before you get your baby’s ears pierced. Learn how to protect your baby before you go.

My mom had my ears pierced when I was about 4 months old. She took me as a newborn to a less than sterile mall environment to get my ears pierced by some minimum waged kid back in the early 80’s. Luckily, the earrings that actually penetrated my ears were said to have been sterilized by the manufacturer prior to shipment.

Immediately after two weeks, my mom changed my earrings to a pair of gold baby screw back earrings. She tells me now that the reason why a baby should wear post earrings and not hoop earrings is because a baby’s little fingers can be caught in hoops and accidentally pull the earring through the ear. To prevent that from happening, I wore small gold ball earrings that smoothly glided across clothes and hair, so not to get tangled in things.

The most important piece to that baby earring set was the screw back. Having a screw back meant the end of the post went unexposed. The screw back actually protects the back of the ear and side of the baby’s head from getting irritated by the sharp point. This is especially useful if baby sleeps in the earrings.

So if you are thinking of having your baby’s ears pierced, have an extra set of baby screw back earrings handy. This way, you can switch out the earrings when her ear has healed and your baby will be more comfortable at night.

If I can leave you with a little more advice, I would highly recommend taking your bundle of joy to an actual piercing professional. Piercing studios are regulated by very strict OSHA laws to ensure your baby will be safe with a highly trained piercer and freshly sterilized equipment. Whereas, the people at the mall only watch a video tape and don’t even sterilize the ear gun that has pierced hundreds of people prior. I highly recommend piercing studios for your own baby’s health and safety.
