Joe The Intern here for my last and final blog post. As my co-worker Brent would say, cries. Going to try to keep this post as entertaining as possible for the common reader. Top 10 lists always seem to be popular, so I’ve decided to formulate the top 10 things I love at Become.com, not only our fabulous website, but life at the office including aspects of my internship.

#10 : The Employee Internet Chat Room

What better way to communicate to other co-workers? These chat rooms are always meant to discuss work and questions, but they often contained some great digressions. Mostly video game talk between Kris, Hyun and Sean and yes they got a little old, but still wouldn’t be a day at work without them. There was also a separate foosball channel to challenge opponents, we also had an excel sheet with stats. Call us dorks or losers but we are all ballers and will own any of you in a foos game.

#9 : Eating At Country Deli

Our office is in a great location with a myriad of choices for eating lunch. A couple weeks in Brent motivated me to try out this new deli right down the street. It is now probably my favorite sandwich place in town. Great sandwiches, great prices, great atmosphere and just a Google bike ride away.

#8 : Working with various engineer tools

There’s really nothing more to say than there are some really intelligent and amazing people that work here. Some of these tools, although detailed and complex, are purely fascinating. I spent a large amount of my time working with them and they truly are a work of art. I would not even know where to start when building a program, the engineers here can build a top of the line one here in a matter of weeks. Cheers to them.

#7 : The Endless Amounts of Snacks in the Office

Not a day would go by without munching on some quality snacks from the snack cabinet. It was replenished weekly and was a great hold over between meals and some brain food. The juice squeeze’s, snapples, water, and of course coffee was also frequently utilized by yours truly.

#6 : Wednesday Night Bar Night

Every Wednesday would be our weekly outing to the Sports Page. It was a great time to have some drinks with part of the team as well as get to know people outside the office environment. The most entertaining part were the mild drinking games as well as credit card roulette to decide the fate of who purchased the next pitcher.

#5 : Foosball

Really nothing much to say here, but Foosball played a big part of the day. It would be the highly anticipated 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock and end of the day break. Games would get very intense and were always entertaining. I am in the processing of getting an affordable table off craigslist to bring the mayhem to Davis. Sorry to all the people in the office who got frustrated with the constant banging of the ball off wall to wall. I am sure the gameplay will go down a lot more now that the great players(aka interns) are out of the office.

#4 : Posting on Pocket Change

Ranking in at number four is this wonderful blog. As it doesn’t have as much traffic as we would like it to, it was great to be able to post my thoughts on here as well as promote our readers some products. Hope you guys enjoyed my posts, who knows maybe I’ll be occasionally brought back for a special guest post.

#3 : Writing Advertisements

For about the first month and a half here I had the great opportunity to learn the google adwords system and write and post advertisements for our products. These things, although simple and short, were very entertaining to write. Mine as well throw one out here now. Research, Shop, and Save at Become.com, Shopping Your Way!

#2 : The People

Ahh the people. The main reason why I enjoyed working here so much. As I never got to thoroughly meet everyone in the office, I got a pretty great understanding of the wonderful people we have working here. Mostly working with the SEM and Researcher team, I think we all got along quite nicely. Yea those “other” interns Jason and Jessica kinda made me look bad, it was still all great times. Kris was a great supervisor and kept me in line as much as he could. And Will Smith, yes I still have more seniority than you here since I have worked here a month and 6 days longer than you. What a great way to say farewell than on International Talk Like Pirate Day. Pictures are worth 1,000 words.

#1 : Shopping on Become.com

If you anticipated a more climatic #1 I apologize, but what Joe The Intern post would it be without advertising a great product? Seeing the day to day operations of the sight and meeting the people behind it make me love it even more. Call it sucking up if you will but the site backs all the talk up. I think we are doing great things and are always looking out for the average consumer. We have some great features and have some great plans for the future. Go get yourself some PocketChange.

1. Jason’s Transfixion with Solving the Rubik’s Cube: Jason probably spent 24 hours over the course of one week watching YouTube video after video on how to solve the Rubik’s cube. The mere thought of his face in deep concentration as he attempted to memorize algorithms cracks me up. He sure has determination. Oh yeah, and did I mention his obsession with playing foosball? I’m convinced he would seriously have a mental breakdown if he had to go a day without playing his beloved game. Hey Jason, why don’t you try to get some actual work done today?
2. Joe’s Classic Smirk: The self proclaimed Joe the Intern sure had a lot to contribute around here. His mouthy sarcastic remarks coupled with his mischievous I-know-I’m-a-jerk smirk are invaluable to daily life in the office. Oh boy, am I going to miss his haughtiness…not.
3. Brent’s Blue Mountains: If there ever was a great supervisor, Brent would be the man (+5 points Brent??) and I’m not just saying this because I expect a superb reference letter when I leave in a week. He really is the best at explaining things and making everyone feel comfortable asking questions. His jokes on the other hand…they need work. I will never forget the “Blue Mountain” riddle he told us—not because it was clever or even remotely funny—but because there wasn’t even an answer! He had so much fun laughing at us when we gave up. Nice one Brent.
4. Linda’s Trekkiness: Super nice and sweet, Linda is renown for her corny jokes around here. Ask her for a joke, and she’ll fill your ear with “funny” obvious witticisms that provoke responses consisting of “Oh-HA-HA.” But she’s known for more than just her quirky sense of humor, she’s also known as the trekky of the office. I’m going to miss our conversations about her diverse range of interests.
5. Kris’ Obsession with the Cyberworld: I’ve never met anyone who knows more—and talks more—about video games and iphone apps than Kris. His daily remarks about Pandora, Warcraft, and Wii define the normalcy of our office ice chats. He has taught me so much about of the gaming world—which I would have never even set foot in had I been given the choice. I am forever grateful to him for opening my eyes to ‘the other’ side of the world.
6. Will’s Priceless Comments: Will never ceases to amaze any of us with his stories about Cal football games and his memorable one-liners (“I got cheesy sticks”). To say the least, the office wouldn’t be the same without you, Will. Great times.
