Over the past few years, the PDF (portable document format) has become the defacto standard for rich media documents. Developed by software giant Adobe, PDFs are a convenient way to store and share documents electronically, and their program Acrobat 9 Professional is one of the most powerful ways of creating PDFs.

If you’ve done any kind of graphic editing on the computer before, you’ve no doubt heard about Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is the most popular and powerful image editing program out there, and millions of people use it every year to retouch photos, design graphics, and even create art.

If you have the misfortune of being stuck using a PC at home, you’ve probably heard that Windows Vista is a dud. Ever since it launched, there have been major bugs in the operating system, with many devices and drivers not working with it, and the interface was changed significantly enough to make doing even familiar tasks confusing and frustrating.

Many people have held off from upgrading to Vista for these reasons, but unfortunately, many new PCs come with Windows Vista already installed on them. If you find yourself in this situation, you may want to consider purchasing Windows XP Home with SP3 OEM to downgrade your operating system to the older version.
So why downgrade to Windows XP? As I mentioned before, the user interface of Vista was significantly revamped, so that navigating the computer is a different experience than it was in XP. While some of these changes are arguably better, many of them can just be confusing, and it can take a significant investment of time and effort to figure out how the layout of the new OS. Sticking to Windows XP can save you that time and effort, so you can spend time using the computer to do what you want it to do, not trying to master a new operating system.

Another benefit of Windows XP Home with SP3 OEM is that it runs faster, and with a smaller memory footprint. The developers of Windows Vista went all out in developing all these extra features and eye candy for their new OS, but this had the consequence of increasing the memory requirement, and actually making the operating system run slower on most machines. If you don’t like the idea of being dragged down by your operating system, Windows XP Home will do what you want it to do without getting in the way and slowing you down.

Ok, so we know why Windows XP is great, but why Windows XP Home with SP3 OEM? Let’s break down a few of those acronyms. SP3 means “service pack 3″. Windows, unfortunately, is a big target for hackers, and is riddled with bugs that can allow malicious hackers to take over your computer. Microsoft periodically releases updates to its OS, called “service packs”, which help to patch some of these problems. Windows XP Home with SP3 OEM already comes with this upgrade installed, so you know you’re getting the latest version of the OS with the security upgrades installed.

Secondly, OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer”. This is a somewhat confusing term, but generally means that the software was purchased from the original manufacturer in bulk, resulting in a lower price. Bottom line is that OEM software is significantly cheaper than the same software out of the box, which is great for you since you’re paying extra already to downgrade your system to Windows XP.

So those are just some of the reasons you should consider getting Windows XP Homr with SP3 OEM, if you find yourself stuck with a new computer with a less-than-stellar operating system. This is one instance where getting an old copy of Windows is actually better for your new PC. Of course, you could just save yourself all of this hassle, and buy yourself a Mac, which in my opinion has a better operating system and hardware, but to each their own

It’s getting near that time again, when students all over the world are forced to pack up their pencils and notebooks, and head back to school. One of the tools that has become indispensable in recent years in Microsoft Office 2007. Office 2007 is the latest version of Microsoft’s ubiquitous suite of software applications, and it is a key tool that’s used in both offices and schools.

The only problem with Office is that the software is rather pricey, which is why Microsoft has created Office 2007 Home & Student edition, which is tailor made for students and consumers. Featuring many of the same great applications as the business edition of Office, Office 2007 Home & Student is available for just a fraction of the price, so that it’s affordable to cash strapped students.

Another great thing about Office 2007 Home & Student is that it comes with 3 licenses. What’s a license? Typically, a computer program includes a license, or an agreement which states for many computers you can install it on. The business edition of Microsoft Office, for example, only comes with one license, which means you can only install it on one computer. If you have multiple computers, you need to buy multiple copies of Office.

Not so with Office 2007 Home & Student edition, which can be installed on up to 3 machines, so you can have a copy on both your desktop AND your laptop, and still have a license so you can install it on your computer at home, or maybe even share with your college roommate.

So what exactly does Office 2007 Home & Student come with? Well, the Office Suite of applications is made up of 3 key applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft Word is Microsoft’s flagship word processing program for creating documents and desktop publishing. Office 2007 Home & Student also comes with other programs, depending on which edition you get. If you’re on the Mac, Office 2007 comes with Entourage, which is an e-mail and calendaring program similar to Microsoft Outlook, and also MSN Messenger, which is Microsoft’s instant messaging client.

Whichever edition of Office 2007 you get, you’ll get all of the key programs that will get you through your classes: Word for writing up papers, PowerPoint for creating presentations for class, and Excel for running all of your formulas. Microsoft Office is pretty much a requirement for school these days, and Office 2007 Home & School edition is the latest, and most affordable version of Office out there.

• Operating System: Make sure that your desktop computer comes with a genuine home edition of an operating system, which suits your computer’s configuration.
• Technical Support: After-sale support and warranty periods are a prime consideration especially if you have no experience in troubleshooting computers. Most warranties last for a one to two years, quite enough for the average user.

A big factor to consider is the fact that Windows 7 will be coming out in the fall.  That doesn’t preclude you from buying a laptop now, which will usually come with Windows Vista, because Mircosoft is letting people upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 at a deep discount.  But you may want to avoid the whole issue of upgrading operating systems.  Then I recommend an Acer Notebook.  Certain Acer lines like the Acer Netbook already run off of Linux, and Acer is pushing aggressively for its entire line of laptops, including the Acer Aspire, to run off of Linux very soon.  Take a look today!

Taxes for Dummies

Once you get into it, it’s really not that hard. This is only the second time I’ve ever filed my income taxes and, although I did put it off for a bit, I am still surprised at how easy tax software is. A week after I filed, my coworkers were still looking up deductions and filling out worksheets the old fashioned way. Granted they did save themselves a few bucks, I am thankful that I was able to save myself a few hours. For my taxes I used and was very pleased with the TurboTax system, but I hear that the TaxBrain and TaxCut (from H&R Block) software have several extra benefits as well as being easy to use.

Although I play mine on an Xbox 360, the game is also available for the Playstation 3 and even on your desktop PC.  What is exciting to me is that on the Xbox 360 they are releasing a new expansion pack for the game called The Lost and the Damned.   There’s no disk to buy for this, you simply order it online (exclusively) through your Xbox 360.  Now you don’t have to drive out to a store to buy it or worry if the local gaming franchise might run out of copies, you can download this game from the comfort of your living room.  This could be the future of games, and it reminds me of fairly similar way to buy things… Become!
