1. Food & Treats – Do some research before hand on what type of diet you want your young dog to have. It is suggested to use the same food the breeder or the shelter was feeding the pup.
2. Grooming supplies - Some dogs might have more sensitive skin than others, so make sure to get the correct brush, shampoo, nail clippers, scissors, toothpaste and toothbrush. Ask the breeder or shelter for any brand recommendations.
3. First aid kit – A first aid kit is a must. You will need scissors, tweezers, sticks, gaze, stretchy bandages, alcohol wipes and antibiotic ointment for dogs to tend to any issues before you get to the Veterinarian.
4. Pet playpen – Puppies have a tendency to explore and make messes. Try to contain your pup in a room with ventilation and hard floors when you are not within sight.
5. Puppy training pads – If you are keeping your pup indoors while you are at work or school, using potty pads will help pup stay clean when they aren’t quite house trained.
6. Dog car seat / crate – New travel seats have been made to strap a young dog into a booster seat so she can see out the window while being safely belted in.
7. Dog bed / crate – Depending on if you want to crate train your dog or not, a doggy bed can be a comfortable place to take naps in a corner or inside the crate.
8. Dog carrier purse – If you plan on taking your pup with you while you pick up the kids from school or visit your parents, a pet carrier purse can be a stylish and easy way to transport your pup and your own stuff too.
9. Light reflective collar – A light reflective collar is the best preventative measure you can take just in case your pup gets out of the house at night.
10. Harness & leash – A harness is much safer for you and the dog than walking a dog with a collar. The harness give you more control while little doggy injuries can be reduced.
11. Dog trash bags – Dog walkers everywhere do their part to keep parks and roads clean by using biodegradable doggy bags to pick up after their dog.
12. Deluxe doggy steps – These steps are very often overlooked, but are a very safe tool for your puppy to become more independent around the house.
13. Toys – There are so many types of toys out there. Some dogs like squeaky toys, pulling toys, learning toys and balls. Find the toys that your pup likes and engage her with them.
14. Microchipping – At first I was against micochipping because I wouldn’t want something under my skin. But after volunteering at a local animal shelter, I understood just how many animals get lost and are found without their collars attached.

Over the weekend I started compiling a list of things I plan to buy for the puppies first year with me. This list is going to help me puppy proof my place before the puppy comes and most importantly, budget myself in advance. One of the items on my list was mentioned to me by my friend with another toy breed dog. She said that Deluxe Doggy Steps were her Pomeranian’s favorite tool for getting up to her bed and her couch.

Thinking about it, even I have difficulties climbing into my bed because it’s set on bed risers. That means I’ll have to remove my raisers so the 12″ high Deluxe Doggy Steps offer a more gradual incline for her short legs.

Every winter, my aunt and uncle travel to California to visit the family for the holiday season. Although the summer just ended, they are already planning the trip for this year and have announced that they are bringing a new family addition with them! All of my friends seem to be getting dogs lately. Maybe now is just dog buying season, or perhaps a lot of mothering instincts are starting to kick in, but I’m meeting a lot of new pooches lately. Not that I mind of course– all of these new puppies are adorable.

Of course, new puppies mean a lot of work too. Besides needing to be trained and housebroken, they also need looking after to see that their needs are met. One of my friend’s dogs, Junior, is a baby Maltese, and the little fluff ball is so small that he can’t even climb onto the couch. The poor puppy cries whenever we’re on the couch, until one of us kind enough to life him onto the couch for him.

Do you cringe everytime your dog gets ready to roll in the slush at the dog park or in your backyard? I have seen so many dog owners scream “no, don’t flop in the mud” to no avail. A second later everyone around is having a good laugh and the owner is thinking about the tedious bath.

I have a small dog (21 pounds) and have a tough time getting him into the tub, let alone filling the bucket and keeping him still. The moment I let go of him to fill more water, he shakes himself and their is a bigger mess to clean.

This weekend, I got a pet shower – the Rinse Ace Pet Shower Deluxe and installed it yesterday. It only took me a few minutes to fix it to the bathroom faucet. It was so much easier to just press a button and turn on the shower to focus the water where I wanted it most. The bath took half the time and a fourth of the water.

Here are some things to look for when you get a pet spray or shower:

- Ease of installing the shower (will they fix easily to the faucets in your home)

- Length of the hose

- Flexibility of the hose

- Is the shower easy to operate?

- Is it easy to stow or will it take up a lot of space?

The pet shower is one of my best buys in a long time. I am really pleased about the way it works. For once, I was not tired after bathing my dog. I was actually ready for more, but I only have one dog and no, I am not getting another anytime soon .

Owning an adorable pet comes with lots of responsibilities; it is like taking care of your own baby. Finally, your budget is one of the most important factors that will determine what type of pet gate you select. Whatever is your budget, you can get plenty of different options to choose from. While low cost is generally more attractive, you may want to think about the durability, safety and other factors before arriving at your final decision. Think it this way – you are buying it for the most trusted and cutest friend in your life. Do I need to say more?

1. Pet treats are loved by all.  Regardless of what type of pet party you are going to, there are treats made especially for that animal. For an added bonus, try buying treats that are handmade, organic or raw.

8. Fancy stuff like a flashy ID tag, a gps pet collar, a dog breed DNA identification kit, a personalized feeding dish, or even some artwork for the pet’s den are sure to wow the parents.
9. Toys are fun gifts but are sometimes a bust. Some pets are picky and only use their favorite toys, so be sure to give a receipt with the toy. But if you insist, try a toy similar to one the pet already has, or one that stores treats in it and helps the animal work on concentration.
10. Clothes for the season the party is held, is preferred. So if the party is in the summer I suggests paw mittens to protect themselves from the hot pavement or a raincoat during the rainy season.
