Flip flops are worn across the world but have unique names in each country. The other day, I was at REI and heard someone ask the assistant for "slippers". At first the assistant gave a puzzled look, and then said "oh you mean flip flops." Slippers probably derives from the ease with which you can slip on these footwear.
