Flip flops are back in style. The origin of the flip flops dates right back to the 50s. However, this fashion accessory has successfully withstood the test of time and gone on to make an all new style statement. The flip flops are known by different names in different countries or places. Known as the Hawaii Chappal in Pakistan and India, Jandals in New Zealand, the slip-slops in South Africa and the Thongs in Australia, they have different names but one characteristic that is common everywhere is their ready acceptance as comfort wear.

Having had a makeover that has kept pace with the times, the flip flops are both comfortable and stylish. A great way to step out in style, they come in a range of colors and designs to match every look and mood of yours. From the bright colored casual beachwear flip flops to the semi-formal ones in neutral shades, they are comfort wear that you can slip into easily and wear just about anywhere.

Flip flops are priced very low and thus, are an absolutely affordable buy for almost anyone. The beach season is upon us and here is a list of top 10 things that you may want to considering bringing along on your outting.

Beach towel- A beach towel is a must whether you are using it to dry off after wading in the ocean or using it as a bed to lay on over the sand. They are generally much larger/softer than regular towels. Take a look.
Sunglasses- If you’re going to the beach, it’s probably a nice sunny day, so bring a nice pair sunglasses that have UV protective lenses to shield your eyes from the harmful sun rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunspots in your eyes.
Beach Umbrella- A nice beach umbrella is always nice to have around on days when the sun-rays are too much to bear.
Bathing Suit- Board shorts, Speedos, or bikinis are a must if you plan on heading into the water.
Sun Block-Avoid skin cancer and other skin ailments by protecting yourself with sunblock. Make sure to check the SPF level on the label, the higher the SPF, (Sun Protection Factor) the more UV rays you are blocking.
Flip Flops- Flip flops are great for the beach because they protect your feet from the hot sand/ rocks and they are easy to clean afterward.
Boombox- Make your beach trip experience even more relaxing with some tunes. Don’t forget the batteries.
Body Board – Body boards are great for way to ride some waves if you can’t fit that surfboard into your car.
Cooler- Toss in some ice and some soda/water/ etc. and your set. Don’t forget the red disposable cups!
Magazines- A nice stack of your favorite magazines will make your beach trip complete. Nothing more relaxing than laying out in the sun with some good reading material.

Most of us have experienced wearing uncomfortable shoes. I personally have these pair of flip flops that gave me a blister above my big toe where the strap rubs against the skin area. When I bought them they felt pretty comfortable, but later with time they started giving more problems; specially when walking around my school’s campus. The arch of my right foot started hurting. I think that the same preferences we have when buying running shoes or walking shoes, we also need to have them for flip flops. There are some flip flops that have stiff straps that rub between your big toe and hurt when you walk. Also, most do not have an arch support for superior comfort when walking.

Flip flops are worn across the world but have unique names in each country. The other day, I was at REI and heard someone ask the assistant for “slippers”. At first the assistant gave a puzzled look, and then said “oh you mean flip flops.” Slippers probably derives from the ease with which you can slip on these footwear. Adidas has a wide range of comfortable men’s flip flops and colorful women’s flip flops in light pink, blue and green.

Let’s take a look at some of the names that flip flops are referred to in different countries: Thongs in Australia, Baffies (from shuffle) in Scotland, Chappal or Hawaii Chappal in India, Surippa in Japan, and Tsinelas or Hawaianas in the Philippines. Flip flops remind me of comfort, relaxation, the beach, warm weather, fun and frolic.
