However, burn-in is a common problem among display systems due to the physical properties of plasma technology.

Manufactures are aware of this problem  and in the last few years, they have steadily worked on trying to improve the resistance of plasma screens to burn-in.

Most new plasma TVs models have anti-burn programs that you can run every 100 hours or so to eliminate any image retention.

What most people don’t know, it is that they can actually prevent burn-in on their brand new TV by taking some simple precautions.

First of all, you should be aware that burn-in usually happens in the first 200 hours of use of a plasma TV screen. So it is when you should be more careful with the plasma TV and you should run the anti-burn settings every 100 hours.

Moreover, to avoid burn-in, do not leave DVDs paused for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Also, it is recommend to watch TV on full-screen mode instead of 4:3 screen to not display static black bars for too long on the screen.

For the same reason some uses are not suited for plasma TVs as displaying static information as they do in  stores or at the airport, for example. For those purposes, LCD screen are highly recommended.

Another precaution that you can take it is to adjust the contrast setting at or below 50% in order to not force phosphors to glow too intensively especially for the first 200 hours of use.

Finally, higher quality TVs are more resistant to burn-in, so brands such as Sony, Pioneer or Panasonic for plasma TVs are definitely preferable.

The bottom line is that with some simple precautions you can avoid burn-in screen issues and that most of plasma TVs will probably never encounter this problem.

My first advice would be to not get fooled by all the commercials and marketing techniques that try to lure you in to buying the latest and greatest high-tech gadgets because you probably do not really need them.

Instead you should assess your needs and expectations when shopping around for a new product.

That said, when choosing your TV, if you can afford it you should definitely go for the highest resolution: 1080p; like the Toshiba 1080p REGZA.
However, this is worth it only if you are purchasing at least a 32″ screen tv, because anything under this size, you probably won’t notice the difference in the resolution to that of a 720p television.
If you are buying an LCD flat panel, go for a model with the highest refresh rate, like the Sharp LCD TV 100hz: as this is a key feature that will reduce the blur and pixellation as fast moving motions go across the screen-especially important if you are a big sports fan!
Another thing you may want to look out for are the black levels. Higher black levels will give you a better overall picture as well as better contrast; like the Toshiba 52XV555DB.

Finally, when comparing different TV models you should consider the space you have in your TV room to get the optimal viewing experience.
For instance, with a 32″ TV your primary view area should be 3 to 5 feet away from your set.
With a 42″ tv flat panel you should be at 4 to 6 feet away; with a 50″ tv count 5 to 8 feet; a 58″ tv at least 6 to 9 feet.
And if you have a really massive room you can go for a 65″ TV and you should plan on sitting at least 7 to 10 feet away.

This is a very difficult choice since both, plasma TVs and LCD TVs, are very competitive technologies even though they are quite different to one another.
Plasma TVs use gas suspension stimulated by electric pulse to produce light. While LCD televisions use the same technology found in laptops, cameras or monitors. It is basically liquid-crystal-filled cells held in place between two sheets of glass.
Even though both LCDs and Plasmas have similar features, and offer same selection of size and same price range, the main difference between the two flat panel TVs is the picture and the long-term reliability.
Plasma TVs offer a far better picture quality, especially at night. However LCD monitors do better in really bright room (like airport).
Also, LCD monitors are much better at displaying static images from computers with great clarity and precision. Most importantly, LCDs are more reliable in the long term with no screen burn-in, which is a common problem with Plasma TVs.
So if you are buying a televisions to mainly enjoy it at night with your home theater system I would definitely recommend a Plasma TV like the Panasonic TH-58PZ700.

If you will use your TV as a media center then I would recommend a LCD television as the Sony Bravia  KDL- 46V4100.

Samsung Electronics announced they will be showcasing the world’s slimmest LCD-TV at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Tradeshow from January 8th to 11th.  The new slim LCD TV will be only a quarter of an inch thick, thinner than most mobile handsets, let alone other TVs!  That is more than seven times thinner than the current slimmest television, the Bordeaux LCD TV.  The TV will be powered by an LED backlit display which means there there will be a reduced chance of burn-in images than your standrard plasma TV!
